An Update on the Rwanda Multi Learning Centre
The results of the 2013 evaluation of the Learning Centre show that students appreciate and value the friendships and connections they have made at the centre as well as the confidence and an increased level of comfort that the environment at the Learning Centre has provided. Students identified learning English and computer skills as their top two important skills acquired which has helped give them hope for their future through opportunities in continued education, starting their own businesses or finding a good job.
20th Anniversary of the Genocide – April to June 1994
Twenty years have passed since the horrific events of the Rwandan genocide where an estimated 800, 000 people died at the hands of Hutu extremist militias. Commemorative events for the anniversary have already begun. On January 7th, at the Kigali genocide memorial, the Minister of Foreign Affairs lit a flame of remembrance that will travel throughout Rwanda prior to an official period of mourning that will begin on April 7th. Every year the week of April 7th is a period of mourning where national television shows broadcast footage of the genocide while Rwandans wear purple as the colour of mourning, candlelight vigils are held through the country.
For the 20th anniversary, events have been planned across the country that will focus on cementing the memories of the genocide, fostering reconciliation and reflecting on the progress that has been made since. Please keep Rwanda in your hearts and minds this April as we reflect on the last twenty years.
The Calgary Rwandan community will be hosting a public event in April. If interested please email us and we’ll let you know the details when we get them.
